About

We kept losing the quote

Fieldnote started with an argument we lost. We had done the research — nine interviews, careful notes, a finding we were sure of. In the roadmap meeting someone asked, reasonably, "who actually said that?" And we dug through docs while the decision got made without us.

The customer had said it, clearly, twice. We found the quote that evening, a day too late to matter. What failed wasn't the research; it was the distance between the evidence and the moment it was needed. Every research team we know has a version of this story, and most have stopped telling it because it happens weekly.

Insight doesn't lose to bad intentions. It loses to friction.

So we built the tool we needed that afternoon: a place where interviews arrive already transcribed, where themes carry their receipts, and where a report can answer "who said that?" with a click — the customer's own voice, at the exact moment. Not a smarter analyst. A shorter distance.

Three years in, that's still the whole idea. If a decision is about customers, the customers should get a say — verbatim.

The record so far

  1. 2023

Mara and Dev leave their research-ops jobs after one too many lost quotes.

  2. 2024

First version ships to twelve design partners; transcription only, on purpose.

  3. 2025

Theme tagging launches. The evidence library idea clicks — retention triples.

  4. 2026

340 teams. Living reports arrive, and reports stop being snapshots.

What we hold to

  1. № 01

    Evidence over eloquence

The best argument in the room should be a customer, not the loudest voice. We build so the customer can be in the room.

  2. № 02

    Consent is a feature

Recording people carries obligations. We treat consent flows, retention, and participant dignity as product surface, not legal chores.

  3. № 03

    Fewer, sharper claims

A report with three defensible findings beats one with thirty maybes. Our tools push toward the three.

  4. № 04

    Research is a team sport

Insight that stays in the research team might as well not exist. Viewers are free because readers are the point.
